Tricks Facing Old Age

Monday, November 2, 2009

If don't die young, everybody would be old. However, when confronted with the fact that he will grow old, people often become frightened.

Being old is not easy. Ready or not, you must learn to accept that the heyday was over. Law of nature began to increasingly feel, marked by the decline in various aspects of physical, psychological and social relationships. Plus, there is the perception in society that increasingly discredits the elderly. That the elderly is weak and unproductive. Thus, whether all people should be afraid of growing old?

Charles Swindoll says that life is formed from this, 10% is what has happened to us, and 90% of how we provide RESPONSE. Does not this mean, if you are confronted with old age with all the conditions (10%), but you are able to provide the correct response (90%), then you will be happy?

Erikson, a psychosocial expert, concluded that all human life will be confronted with a variety of psychosocial stages based on age. Starting from the phase of children up to old age. In each stage, there are developmental tasks or crises that must be overcome. In old age, a person faced with the final crisis when he was required to be able to evaluate, take the meaning, and accepting life already lived, including the acceptance of the time near death. If he got through it well, then he reached Ego Integrity. If he fails to pass the crisis, he would have Despair.

"Elderly who have achieved ego integrity characterized like this: he receives the entire time he'd been through, where he felt he had used the best time without remorse means. He also received the imperfections in him and his life. Thus, he felt his life full of meaning. Therefore, he was not afraid of death"

"In contrast, the elderly who failed the old age crisis has these characteristics: he continues to regret that time has passed, he had felt the time was not enough to do the things that he wants so that feel his life meaningless. He also was afraid to face death. This experience is called despair"

So, what about you? Are you among those who are afraid to grow old? If yes, while there is time, change the way you think and behave. Remember that life is a choice and that choice is entirely up to you. You decide whether ego integrity or despair you want to accomplish.

To achieve ego integrity in old age, you should begin to nurture henceforth. Final crisis (ego integrity vs. despair) can you pass it successfully if you are able to pass the previous stage well.
Here are reflective questions to determine your own psychosocial stages :
  • Are you begun to realize that soon you will be old ?
  • Are these days you often reflect on the values, priorities and your whole life?
  • Are you worried that will be lonely when the children marry and left the house?
  • Are you beginning to feel that you are no longer possible to achieve the dreams of youth?
If the majority of your answer Yes, you may not realize that you are currently experiencing a midlife crisis, or better known as a second puberty.

This phase is called midlife crisis because it is generally experienced by those aged 40-59 years. This period is also a person faced with a stressful period marked by reviewing and evaluating the activities of her life back. Midlife crisis is a stage before the ego integrity vs despair.

In a midlife crisis, the crisis is Generativity vs Stagnation. If you develop the current concerns in building, helping, and to influence the next generation better, it indicates you achieve generativity.

Conversely, if you do not do forwarding to the next generation then you will experience feelings of self-absorbed, self indulgent or stagnant.

Achievement of generativity is the key to successful psychosocial adjustment in middle age (midlife). With the success in midlife, of course, you will be better in the face the final crisis, so you'll be happy and the elderly who are psychologically healthy. In addition, the strategy of thinking and adaptive behave, you will be able to reduce the stress caused by poor conditions, so you can meet with a good old age as much closer to the creator (increasing religiosity, retain activity (keep busy), for example, by gathering activities with peers (such as fishing), doing the things you've always wanted to do but do not have the time, develop new hobbies such as positive writing, painting, or anything else, getting support from family, and have a positive attitude.

Is it true that elderly are not productive? What about the Hollywood actress, Madonna, at the age of no longer young, she still exists with a myriad of activities, whether an artist or the activities of social activities. So does Julia Roberts, who recently released her new film was in Bali, they still exist in the entertainment world today. They have removed the stigma that the elderly do not productive. What about you? are you also would remove the stigma?
