Each year 17 million person estimated to die from cardiovascular disease.

One of the factors associated with cardiovascular disease is a blood lipid profiles, the conditions in the blood fats, including the number and type of cholesterol in the body.

There are 2 types of cholesterol in the body, namely LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein) carrying the cholesterol compounds are from the heart into the arteries. This can cause the buildup of cholesterol in the blood vessels. Meanwhile, HDL cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein) carrying the cholesterol compounds from the arteries to the liver to be reused or removed from the body. This can help prevent cholesterol buildup and blockage in the blood vessels.

Green tea for heart health
Research conducted by experts in Portuguese, as listed in the Nutrition Research, shows that consumption of 1 liter of green tea every day for 4 weeks can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This is indicated by the decrease in the amount of LDL cholesterol by 8.9%, increase the amount of HDL cholesterol by 4%, and decrease the value of the ratio between total LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol is widely used as an indicator of cardiovascular disease.

Led by Dr. Nikolaos Alexopoulos of Athens Medical School in Greece, the researchers found that among 14 people, those who drank green tea showed enlargement of arteries in their hearts 30 minutes longer than those who drink coffee or hot water. This is because, the scientists speculate, green tea works on the lining of blood vessels, helping cells remove substances needed to relax the vessels and allow blood to flow more smoothly.

Benefits of green tea for heart health are believed to be associated with a high content of polyphenol compounds in tea (approximately 30-45%), especially compound Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), Epigallocatechin, Epicatechin gallate, and Epicatechin. Polyphenol compounds themselves are antioxidant compounds that can inhibit the oxidation of fat by binding compounds free radicals that can cause damage to cells.
